Another day, another TikTok hack. From making your own Christmas crackers to ‘gift-wrapping’ your front door, use these clever (and cost-effective) decorating tricks to make sure you have a holly, jolly festive season.
1. DIY door decoration
Let the festive feels come knocking early this year. Decorate your door to look like a huge, wrapped gift; all you need is a hot-glue gun, scissors, some red ribbon and a (very) big red bow. It’s the perfect way to invite the festive spirit into your home without breaking the bank.

2. DIY festive crackers
Thoughtful party favours will get all your dinner party guests talking for all the right reasons. While Christmas crackers can be considered for the kiddies’ tables, why not try grown-up ones? You can make them yourself with discarded toilet-roll inners and other small budget-friendly items. This way you can create handmade gifts containing thoughtful mementos that your guests will truly cherish without spending too much money. And they will make your Christmas lunch table simply delightful.

@thegreenhub1 Ecofriendly DIY Christmas crackers. I love pulling crackers at Christmas lunch – the silly hats, the lame jokes – it’s one of those little Christmas traditions I really enjoy. But I hate the useless toy inside – often plastic – and the paper can’t be recycled. So off to landfill it all goes, it’s such a waste. So this year I made my own. All the materials I used can be composted at the end of the day. And the gifts inside are truffles with home compostable wrapping, skincare samples, and tiny bottles of liqueur I know will be well received. All the fun and none of the waste! You’ll need: Paper 32x22cm – 3 toilet rolls – twine – snaps & hats – jokes – treats for inside. Lay the paper flat, print side down. Place the snap inside a toilet roll and hold in place – you could also glue this down. Place toilet rolls at either end – this just helps shape the ends nicely. You can skip this step if you want. Pull the end rolls out slightly so there’s a small gap and gently scrunch the paper. Remove the end roll and tie it off with twine. Repeat on the other side. #christmasdiy #ecochristmas #aussiechristmas ♬ Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! – Dean Martin
3. Window decorations
Give your window a festive dressing with nothing more than a white water-based marker. “Draw a circle and some branches, then fill each branch with needles. Then, use a q-tip (cotton bud) to carve a straight line out of each branch,” explains TikTokker @happyevercrafter. It’s a creative, cost-effective, waste-free and mess-free way to make your holiday decor merry and bright.

4. Gift-wrapping hack
Wrapping presents is a gift on its own. With this genius tip, you can make your gifts look lush and professionally wrapped in no-time (thanks, TikTok). Use wrapping paper or re-usable fabric wrap to cover your present, creating an overlapped envelope design. Once done and taped up, personalise it with a Polaroid picture decorated with leaves and small flowers. Bonus tip: Your beautifully wrapped gift can double up as table décor. Place it on the allocated seat to spruce up your table and make your dinner-party guests feel extra special.
