Can you think of a better way to spend a pleasant day than an afternoon in the Cape Winelands? Eikendal does you one better and throws pizza into the mix.
By Roxy Greeff
We tried it out for ourselves and it was delicious, with each slice perfectly paired with one of the award-winning wines.
We began with their zingy chicken and pineapple pizza, paired with their new Sauvignon Blanc 2015. This tropical white wine was the perfect partner for the sweet and sour notes of the pizza.
Next we moved on to the lovely Janina Unwooded Chardonnay 2015, which has a zesty flavour reminiscent of winter citrus. It was paired with a ham and olive pizza and, in this case, it was the food that highlighted the subtle earthiness in the wine.
Now, personally, I am not a fan of reds or rosé, but I savoured every sip of Eikendal’s Merlot Rosé 2015. It was sweet, without too many tanins, and with a distinct berry flavour you don’t need to be connoisseur to taste. This was paired with a rich Brie and cranberry pizza, the perfect sweet end to a meal.
Eikendal is also a big believer in getting the whole family involved. So if your little ones want to try out a tasting of their own, they can settle in for the estate’s Pizza Cookie Decoration and Tasting. Their board will be complete with two pizza cookies, a gingerbread man, decorating materials and a glass of milk for some dunking fun.
