But it’s not all chips and chocolates, as many of the goodies available can often make you feel bloated, uncomfortable and lack energy (which is made worse by the long car ride with minimal bathroom breaks). The next time you start planning your trip, plan your snacks too with these affordable ideas in mind.

By Taryn Wilson

1. WATER

Despite making you need the bathroom, you need to have water on your road trip to keep you hydrated and give you energy for the long drive.

2. FRUIT

Fruit is sweet and packed with natural sugars that not only aid in energy, they also help with digestion, keeping your tummy feeling good while you lounge in the car.

3. NUTS

Snacking on a handful of nuts a day can give you amazing benefits, and they’re perfect for road trips because they provide energy and keep you feeling fuller for longer.

4. BILTONG & DROERWORS

These are definitely a fave! Dried meat has a lot to offer in terms of taste and protein, making it a healthy treat any day (and especially for a car trip).

5. HOME-MADE SANDWICHES

If you don’t bring home-made sandwiches is it even a road trip? Peanut butter and jam, ham and cheese – these are two great staples, but you can mix up your fillings to have more of variety.

6. SPORTS DRINKS

Skip the soft drinks and go for your favourite sports energy drink to keep you hydrated and awake during your trip.

7. PROTEIN BARS

Another naturally filling treat, you can get different flavours of protein bars that are much better than plain chocolate bars.

8. POPCORN

Who doesn’t love popcorn? It’s light, crunchy, and comes in so many flavours! Make sure you add it to the snack pile before you go.

9. WHOLEWHEAT CRACKERS

Snag yourself a pack of tasty crackers to munch while on the road. And don’t forget the dip!

10. DARK CHOCOLATE

Did you know that dark chocolate is actually beneficial for you? All in moderation of course! But if you pack in a slab to share with friends in the car, you can’t go wrong.

Image: Unsplash
